Matches at Griffin Park did come to an end, successfully but quietly, during COVID, with a victorious 3-2 (on agg) playoff semi final against The Swans on Wednesday 29th July, 7.45pm and with not too many BMW games to look forward to in the future with the, soon to follow, sale of Ollie Watkins to Aston Villa and later the loan (and eventual sale) to West ham, of Säid Benrahma.
On the night itself there were farewells to Griffin Park, as the Bees approached the chance of top-flight football more than at any point since 1947 as Fulham or Cardiff lie in wait at a deserted Wembley Stadium the following Tuesday – it was Fulham but that is another story.
And then of course the first Gtech (Brentford Community Stadium was the name then) match appeared on the horizon at 3.00 pm on Tuesday 1st September 2020, 18 years after Bees fans began campaigning for a new stadium in Brentford, their wishes came true. But coronavirus meant that thousands of fans who might witness the first match, could not. It was meant to be against a high profile club from the Premier League or the German Bundesliga. Instead the circumstances dictated it was a friendly with Oxford United of League One. Fans were restrictred to live streams on their phones or laptops.
