BEES UNITED NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2021

Membership Number <<Membership No.>>

Our first Christmas as a Premier League Club is going to be an odd one for Bees fans but we will celebrate anyway. We can go to games as long as we’ve got the right medical paperwork and the Bees have got a squad of 14 men still standing despite COVID. And, of course, as long as the Government doesn’t change its mind and insist games are played behind closed doors as they were last Christmas.

THOMAS SAYS ZERO COVID CASES SO CHELSEA GAME IS ON

Thomas Frank says Brentford had no positive COVID tests on Tuesday and Wednesday's Carabao Cup game against Chelsea is on as far as Brentford is concerned. But 3 players who tested positive last week may not have completed self-isolation in time for the game. Last week when Brentford had 14 COVID cases amongst players and staff Thomas called for Premier League matches to be called off to ‘break the chain’ of COVID infections.

As it turned out six out of ten games had to be postponed anyway. Then on Monday the Premier League announced fixtures would go ahead over Christmas and the New Year. The only exception will be if a club doesn’t have 13 fit players plus a goalkeeper. Bees United had pledged full support for Thomas’s call for transparency about each club’s COVID numbers and clarity about the criteria for postponing games.

We’ve tried to make sense of the rules.

WHAT PLAN B MEANS FOR THE BEES

The Government’s Plan B means Bees fans have to take certain steps to be allowed into games. Club staff have prepared an important checklist. For those BU members who are not online and get this newsletter by post, we are putting in the envelope a print out of the checklist.

CLIFF CROWN TO ANSWER QUESTIONS

Brentford FC Chairman. Cliff Crown, who with CEO Jon Varney has been involved in the important Premier League meetings, has agreed to answer questions from our members at the BU Annual General Meeting in January. With so much uncertainty about fixture changes and COVID rules we can’t put a date on it yet or decide whether it will be a limited numbers in person event as well as online. But as soon as we can we will send an email to all members with the details, additional guest speakers and how you can put a question to Cliff.

BRENTFORD 2 WATFORD 1

Before COVID intervened (again) there was another Friday night cracker in the final ten minutes of the game against Watford. BU Contributing Editor captured all the fun of the night.

ALL CHANGE AT JERSEY ROAD ?

Amidst all the immediate problems of trying to keep the Jersey Road training ground COVID-free Brentford have set out a long-term vision of how a redeveloped training centre might replace the current facilities. The designs are the first in a long series of steps before Hounslow Council decide whether to give planning permission. Compare what’s there now with what may replace it.

FAREWELL TO THE BRAEMAR ROAD SHOP

We asked which Bees fan had painted a picture of Griffin Park and handed in a photograph of it at the Brentford exhibition at the Museum of Water and Steam. BU member Brian Wapshott got in touch to say it was him. We especially liked the way Brian painted the old club shop which has been replaced by the new superstore. We asked another fan, Jonathan Burchill, to give us some facts about its history from his new book.
