2007/8: A Superb Season for Trust Owned Clubs PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 May 2008

The victory by Stockport County FC at Wembley on Monday was a victory for a Supporters’ Trust owned club, and it wasn’t the only one of the past season.

No less than four such clubs gained promotion from their respective leagues. AFC Wimbledon continued their climb back towards the football league with promotion to the Blue Square South, while FC United, the club formed in protest at the Glazer takeover at Manchester United, are only one step behind with their elevation to the Unibond Premier Division, following three successive promotions. And last weekend, Exeter City triumphed over Cambridge United in their play off final to reach League 2 after 5 years absence.

In the report of Exeter’s win at Wembley in The Times, it was remarked that “It was a financially bankrupt and morally bereft Exeter City that slid ignominiously from the Football League five years ago, but an altogether more appealing side will grace League Two next season.  Gone are the celebrity directors of Michael Jackson and Uri Geller, along with the disgraced businessmen, replaced by a supporters’ trust”

Their victory and this type of positive endorsement from the media of their new regime is what we all want for our own clubs.  Supporters’ Trust clubs are winning on and off the pitch. Here’s to Brentford being the focus of such publicity this time next year.
